Surnames Peričin, Perica and Mrakalić
The surname Peričin has been preserved in Brbinj to this day. According to my research, Peričin family also had another surname, Mrakalić, which is completely forgotten today. The surname Peričin, which is used today, in my opinion, probably originated from the personal name of the head of the Perica family. In addition to the surnames Peričin and Mrakalić, they are also called Perica in the Glagolitic registry books of Brbinj parish.
The death register of Brbinj Parish records the deaths of Šime Mrakalić in 1665, Mikula Mrakalić in 1666 and don Šime Mrakalić in 1700. In the same period, Šime Peričin and Šime Perica "žakan" (trainee for priest) were registered as witnesses in the register of marriages of Brbinj parish in 1650.[1] , so it is possible that Šime Perica "žakan" is don Šime Mrakalić who dies in 1700. In the Book of Chrisms in 1663, don Šime Perica is entered as godfather, while in 1684, don Šimun Mrakalić is entered as godfather. Also, in 1656, the fact of marriage "between Mikula son of Šime Perica and his wife Ela from Brbijn and between Ela daughter of Matia Lisčić" is recorded, so it is possible that it is Mikula Mrakalić who dies in 1666.
It can be seen most clearly that Peričin family is actually Mrakalić family on the example of Tadija Peričin, considering that Tadija is a specific personal name.
In the register of births, the birth of Tadija, son of Šimun Mrakalić and Manda, daughter of Mikula Rančić, was recorded in 1697, thus Tadija Mrakalić. In the observed period, there is not a single child named Tadija in other families in Brbinj. That Tadija was later called Peričin. In the Book of Confirmations in 1706, the confirmation of Ladija, the son of Šimun Mrakalić and his wife Manda, and the confirmation of Manda, the daughter of Šima Mrakalić and Manda, are recorded. In the register of births, the births of the children of Tadija Peričin and Klara Hmučeva from Savra were recorded in the years 1723, 1727, 1730, 1732, 1736 and 1739. Tadija died in 1772 as Tadija Peričin.
That the Peričini are actually Mrakalići can perhaps best be seen from the entries in the lists of the state of souls. Thus, for example, in the list of the state of souls for the year 1658, three Ela Peričinas are listed between Mara and Luca Barićeva and Mara, Ela and Kate Lukšić, and the following year in the same list, again between Mara and Luca Barićeva and Mara, Ela and Kate Lukšić Ela Mrakalića.
In the list of the state of souls from 1661, between Eivan Sedica and Anton Božulić were entered Šime Perica, Miko Perica and Šime Perica, and between Luca Sedičina and Jakomina Supinova, three more Ela Peričinas were entered. Next, in 1662, between Eivan Sedica and Eura Luhšić were registered Šime Mrakalić, Miko Mrakalić and Šime Mrakalić , and between Luca Sedičina and Jakomina Supinova, three Ela Peričinas.
In the list of the state of souls from 1713, Šime Perica and Tadija Perica were entered, and Ursa Peričina of a femaile members. Next, in 1714, Šime Mrakalić and Tadija Mrakalić were registered, and Ursa Mrakalić of females.
In the Excerpts of the oldest registry books of the parish of Brbinj and in the population census of Brbinj from 1608, I did not find an entry of the surname Peričin or Mrakalić, but this does not necessarily mean that Peričin family did not live in Brbinj in that period, because it is possible that they were indicated by another form of the surname. Without proof, such a thing cannot be claimed, but it can be noted that Simon Mersanich was entered in the population census from 1608, whose surname is somewhat similar to the surname Mrakalić.
Peričin or Mrakalić family were not a numerous family. From the register of the dead, we learn that in 1772, Klara Peričin from "incirk" (around) the age of 75 died, Marko Peričin from "incirk" (around) the age of 33, and Tadija Peričin from "incirk" (around) the age of 78, so Tadija and his wife Klara Hmućeva and their son died Marko. After that, there are no more entries of Peričin's children in the register of births of the parish of Brbinj, until 1795, when the baptism of Stošija from Mihovil Peričin and his wife Mara Dužić from Soline is entered. Don Riko writes[2] that Mihovil Rančić (born in 1755, died in 1842), son of Šime, came to the Peričin estate with Matija Bilinova and took over and thus preserved the surname Peričin. According to what I found, Mihovil Rančić was born in 1756 to Šime Petrov ( Rančić) and Matia Brunac, but his wife was not Matija Bilinova, but Mara Dužić from Soline. Whether Dužići and Bilinovi are two surnames of the same family from Soline should be checked. In the register of marriages of Brbinj parish in 1794, a marriage was entered "between Mihovil son of the late Šime Rančić and Mara daughter of the late Božić Dužić from Soline, witnessed by Osip Miklanev and Mihovil Kaštelanov". Therefore, Mihovil Rančić, the son of Šime Rančić, comes to the Peričin estate, and today's members of the Peričin family are actually descendants of Mihovil Rančić and Mara Dužić from Soline. In fact, Mihovil Peričin Rančić and Mare Dužića from Soline had many children, and it is interesting how they are marked in the register of births of Brbinj parish when registering their children's baptisms. After their daughter Stošija, their sons Antun and Jivan were born in 1797, and then they were also registered as Mihovil Peričin and Mara Dužića from Soline. They were registered in the same way in 1799, 1800, 1803 and 1808 when their children Marija, Katarina, Osip and Ursula were baptized. They were registered as Mihovil Rančić and Mare Dužića from Soline in 1806 at the baptism of their son Šimun, and in 1804, at the baptism of their son Andre, they were registered as Mihovil Pavlov and Mare Dužića from Soline.
