Surnames Kamilov and Matučić

The surname Matučić does not exist in Brbinj today. Not even a memory of that last name survived. There are relatively many entries of the surname Matučić in the Glagolitic registers of the Brbinj parish, until somewhere in the 1830s, when there are no more entries of the surname Matučić, but the Kamilov surname is entered in their place in the list of souls of the Brbinj parish. The oldest entry of Matučić that I found in the Glagolitic registries of Brbinj parish is the one from the registry of marriages from 1662, when the marriage between Šimun Stamać and Cecelia, daughter of Matij Matučić, was entered. In 1698, Matij Matučić married Stošija, the daughter of Rade Kulat from Karin, which is interesting because we have no other grooms or brides from Karin or the Obrovac area recorded in the Brbinj Glagolitic registers. Mara, daughter of Matij Matučić, married Jakov Uglešić from Veli Rat in 1700.

According to the position of the entry of Matučić family members in the list of souls of the Brbinj parish, the Matučić is, according to my conclusion, the family we call the Kamilov today. In the Glagolitic registers I did not find a direct wording Matučić deto Kamilov or vice versa, which would directly indicate that it is the same family, but I found indications that point in that direction and which I give below.

In 1720, the death of don Šime Kamilo at the age of 27 was recorded in the death register of Brbinj parish, and in the register of births in 1693, the birth of Šimun, son of Matija Matučić and Stoša, daughter of Šimun Rančić was recorded. Also, in the Book of Confirmations in 1706, the confirmation of Šime, son of Matij Matučić and Stana, was recorded. Šimun Supinov was also born in the same year, which somewhat weakens the value of this indication. In the register of deaths in 1727, the death of Lucija Kamilov from "incirka" (approximately) at the age of 30 was recorded, while in the register of births in 1700, the birth of Lucija, daughter of Matija Matučić and Stana, was recorded. Also, in the Book of Chrisms in 1709, a confirmation was entered of Luce, daughter of Matij Matučić and Stana.

There are stronger indications that come from the inventory of the state of souls of the parish of Brbinj. As stated before[1], in the list of the state of souls from 1709, two Matij Matučić are listed among men, and in the same list from 1710, we have no more Matučić family members, but we have two Matij Kamilov. As for women, in 1709 Jle and Stana Matučić were listed, in 1710 there are no more women with the surname Matučić, but Stana Kamilov was entered, and it should be emphasized that she is the only female person with the name Stana.

From the register of births of Brbinj parish, we see that the lineage of Matij Kamilov was continued by his son Ivan Kamilo. The baptism of this Ivan was entered in the register of births in 1717, when the baptism of "the children of Matij Matučić and Stošia" was entered. In 1739, a marriage between Ivan Kamil, son of Matij Kamil and Ursa Petrova was registered in the register of marriages of Brbinj parish. They had children Matija, Stoša, Ivan, Jela, Klara, Filipa, Kata, Boža and Mara.[2]. Božić (Bože) Kamilov married Matija Bijakanjeva in 1771 and was then identified as Božić Kamilov, son of Ivan Kamilov. Božić Kamilov had sons Šime and Osip with Matija Bijakanjev. Matija died in 1781 and Božić remarried in 1783 to Jelena "from Jure Španol", as written in the register of marriages. Božić and Jelena had a daughter, Klara, in 1784, and then Jelena was marked as Jelena Jurinov in the registry of births, which is another proof that Jure Španol, or Španolić, came to the estate of the Jurinov family. Osip Kamilov, son of Božić Kamilov, married Jivanica Rančeva in 1798, with whom he had Ursa born in 1800, Andre born in 1804 and Kata born in 1807. In the registry of marriages in 1785, the marriage was entered "between Anton, son of Ivan Bilicin from Sestrun, and Jelena, daughter of the late Jure Španol (who were descended from the second and fourth branches of the "friendship" family). In the register of births, Anton Biličin is mostly recorded as Anton Biličin from Sestrunj, once as Anton Kamilov, but also as "Anton Kamilov and Biličin from Sestrun". So, Božić Kamilov probably died between 1783, when he married Jelena, and 1785, when Jelena married Anton Biličin from Sestrunj, who was later called Anton Kamilov. I did not find the entry of the fact of the death of Božić Kamilov in the death register of Brbinj parish.

The connection between the Kamilov family and island of Sestrunj existed even before Antun Biličn came to Kamilov estate, so in the register of marriages in 1726 we have the entry of a marriage "between Franić son of the late Anton Sulupov from Sestrun and Stošija daughter of Matija Kamilov from Brbin".

As I mentioned with the Bahajev family, that is, Odvitović family, the son of Anton and Jelena, Martin Kamilov Biličin (born in 1797, died in 1835) married Kata Božina from Soline (born in 1797, died in 1839) and they came to the estate of don Ivan Odvitović. In the register of the deceased, it is stated that Kata Odvitović died at the age of 42, that she was born in Soline to father Anton Božina and mother Maria Božina. Martin Kamil was born in Brbinj in 1798 (don Riko writes that he was born in 1797), "to Anton Biličin from Sestrugno and Jelena Jurinov called Kamilov". Martin Odvitović dies in 1835 and his parents are listed as Anton Kamilov and Jelena Kamilova.

Anton Kamilov dies in 1829, when in the death register of Brbinj parish, his parents are listed as Ivan Biličin and Mare Biličin. Kamilov Osip, son of Božić Kamilov and Jelena Kamilova, dies in 1846.

From the Register of Buildings we also learn that in 1824 the Kamilov family members Antonio and Giuseppe, were registered as the owners of the building, i.e. the ruins, which today in Brbinj we call Bratski dvor, but with changes to the Register from 1841, the Kamilov were crossed out as owners, and "Birbigno comune" was entered ", therefore the property of the Brbinj local community. I believe that these Antonio Camillov and Giuseppe Camillov, from the Register of Buildings from 1824, are actually Anton Kamilov acctually Biličin from Sestrunj and Osip Kamilov, the son of Božić Kamilov.

The position of the Kamilov family members entry in the list of souls of Brbinj parish corresponds to the position of their house, which we can see with the help of the Franciscan cadastre map for Brbinj and the Register of Buildings from 1824. From these documents it can be seen that the Kamils+ov family had a house, that is, two houses (building lot numbers 15 and 16) at the location where today there are two houses of the family that in Brbinj we call the Kamilov, even though they no longer bear that surnam , both families due to the fact that in the 19th century men from other Brbinj families came to the estate of the Kamilov family and left their surnames. Consequently, today there are no more families bearing the surname Kamilov or Kamilo.

In the earliest censuses of the state of souls of Brbinj parish, i.e. from 1658 to 1660, members of the Matučić family are marked also with the surnames Andrin, Andrijina and Cicilijanov, Cicilijanova, which surnames could perhaps originate from the personal names of the more prominent "family heads" of the Matučić, i.e. the Kamilov from of an earlier period, for which we have no evidence for now. Also, in the Excerpts of the oldest register books of Brbinj parish, we have entries from 1606, when Ursa Andrijina is mentioned.
