Surname Oblak
The surname Oblak has remained unchanged to this day. I didn't find an "other" surname for the Oblak family, but I believe that they probably had another surname in the older period, which, I assume, they were marked with in the population census from 1608.
The death register of Brbinj parish recorded the death of Anton Oblak in 1653, and in 1654, Mare Oblakov, wife of Ivan Oblak, died, and in 1679, Ivan Oblak died at the age of 80.
In 1659, the marriage register of Brbinj parish recorded the marriage of Elina, daughter of Ivan Oblak and Šimun, son of Ivan Ranac, and in 1664 the marriage of Klara, daughter of Eivan (Ivan) Oblak and Marko, son of Ivan Rančić.
In the Excerpts of the oldest registry books of Brbinj parish, I found an entry of the surname Oblaković, so in the register of births in 1604 there is the following entry: "I baptized the daughter of Šimun Lukšić Elena and his wife Katarina Šuvrinić from Žapuntel, godfather Andrija Miličević and godmother Jelena Oblaković". In the population census from 1608, there is no entry of the surname Oblak in Brbinj. Given that the Oblaković were entered in the Glagolitic registers of the parish of Brbinj in 1604, I believe that it is likely that the Oblaković family was "hiding" under another surname in the 1608 census.
In the register of births of Brbinj parish from 1694 to 1809, I found 44 entries of births of children in the Oblak family.
Until 1700, children of Ivan Oblak and his wife Mara and children of Marko Oblak and his wife Klara were born in the Oblak family. As I mentioned before, Anton Oblak died in 1653, Ivan Oblak in 1679 and Marko Oblak in 1693. It could be that this Marko Oblak was actually born in Rančić because in the register of marriages in 1664 we have an entry of the fact of marriage between "Marko son of Ivan Rančić and Klara daughter of Eivan Oblak, witnesses Mati Hrišić and Eivan Miklanić". The male line of the Oblak family was extended through Ivan Oblak's sons, but we also have the arrival of "mulica" (adopted children) in the Oblak family at that time. Namely, in the Book of Confirmations, in 1756, there is an entry of confirmation "Luce which was taken on ??? in Zadar as young child, raised by Lucia Oblakov from Brbinj, whose parents she does not know, santula Mara Španolova". Matij Oblak, aged 57, dies in 1761, Antun Oblak and Jele Oblakova, both aged 55, die in 1762, and Tome Oblak, aged 25, dies in 1766. In the register of deaths of the parish of Brbinj, when the fact of Tome Oblak's death is entered, there is a note "when the deceased Tome Oblak drowned in Mali Ždrec from the year 25".
After these deaths of the adult members of the Oblak clan, in 1768 the fact of marriage was recorded "between Marko, of the unknown father and Matija, daughter of the late Mate Oblak." This Marko takes the surname Oblak, and in the registers of Brbinj parish there is also precise information about where this Marko of an unknown father comes from. Thus, in the register of births of the parish of Brbinj in 1770 there is an entry of the fact of the birth of Ivanica "from Marko father unknown and Matia Oblakova", in 1772 there is an entry of the birth of Štošija "from Marko who was raised in Jadrolić family from Punta Bijanka and Matia Oblakova". In 1778, the birth of Jivan was registered "from Marko who was from Jadrolić family and Matija Oblakova". In 1783, the birth of Matija and Jivanica from Marko Oblak and Matija Oblakova was registered, so now Marko is referred to by the surname Oblak. The male line of the "real" Oblak family also survived through Mrtin and Lovre Oblak, sons of Matij Oblak.
It is likely that the male line of the Oblaks was extinguished, so don Riko in the Chronicle of Brbinj parish[1] writes about an interesting situation that happened in Oblak family in the 19th century. Miho Brunac (born in 1828, died in 1874) takes the surname Oblak, and later Mate Grgin comes to Oblak, who also takes the surname Oblak. From Mate's sons Luka and Ante come the present-day Oblak family members in Brbinj and the family of the late Archbishop Marijan Oblak from Veli Rat.
In the register of marriages of Brbinj parish from 1856, the marriage between Mate Gargin and Marija Oblakova, daughter of Jakov Oblak, was registered.
In the register of births of Brbinj parish in 1800, the birth of Jakov "of Mihovil Bruncubć" was recorded. and Ursa Mirković of Punta Bijanka", who, according to don Riko, is the father of Marija Oblakov, who is married to Mate Grgin, so Marija Oblakova is actually the granddaughter of Mihovil Brunac and Ursa Mirković of Punta Bijanka. In the register of deaths of Brbinj parish in 1874, the fact of the death of "Jakov Brunac called Oblak" was recorded, whose parents were "Miaijlo Brunac and Ursa Mirković".
There is a clear connection between the Oblakfamily and Punta Bianka, i.e. village Veli Rat, because there are frequent marriages that were present until the 20th century. Namely, as was said before, the late Archbishop Marijan Oblak of Zadar, i.e. his family from Veli Rat, actually originates from Brbinj and are descendants of Luka Oblak, the son of Mate Oblak, born Grgin, who in turn came to the estate of Marija Oblak, granddaughter of Mihovil Brunac.
There is another interesting thing about marriage relationships in the Oblaks. In 1788, the fact of the birth of Marko from Lovre Oblak and Anica from Zlarin was recorded, and in 1792 Božić was born from Lovre Oblak and Anica Zlarinca. So, Lovre Oblak is married to Anica from Zlarin, which is spatially relatively far away from Brbinj.
