Surnames Longin, Viskov, Huinov, Šćavunjev, Schiavon, Cvitulić

In Brbinj today there are families that we distinguishe by the names Viskov and Hujnov, even though those families does not bear such surnames today. Both families have houses between houses of the Oblak family and of the Grgin family, near the ruins that were houses of Mikljanjev family from Brbinj.

I believe that Viskov and Hujnov could actually be branches of the old Brbinj family with surname Cvitulić, which split into two families, one of which is called Viskov after Visko (Vick) Cvitulić, and the other Huinov after Mate Cvitulić Huin. In the following, I will present the indications on which I base these conclusions, although a deeper investigation of this genus is needed.

I found the first entry of the surname Cvitulić in the register of deaths of Brbinj parish in 1654, when the fact of death was entered of don Mikula Cvitulić. Katarina Cvitulić died in 1674 at the age of 30, and Mare Cvitulić died in 1694 at the age of 53. The following year, in 1695, Visk Cvitulić died at the age of 65.

I found even older entries of the surname Cvitulić in the Book of Chrisms of Brbinj Parish, so in 1651 "santu" or godfather at the confirmation in Brbinj was don Mikul Cvitulić and "santula" (or godmother) at the other confirmation was Ela Cvitulić.

In 1661, the marriage register of Brbinj parish recorded the marriage of Vicko, son of Šimun Cvitulić, and Mara, daughter of Mikula Rančić, in 1663, the marriage of Eivan, son of Eivan Aničić, and Katarina, daughter of Šimun Cvitulić, in 1665, the marriage of Šimun, son of Ivan Ranac, and Ela, daughter of Šimun Cvitulić. In 1667, Šimun, son of Mikula Lukić, and Mandalina, daughter of Vicko Cvitulić, in 1669, Matia Cvitulić appeared as a witness at the marriage, while Matija Cvitulić married Ursa Tudiškov in 1676. So, in the second half of the 17th century, adult descendants of Šimun and Vicko Cvitulić got married. In the confirmation book of the parish of Brbinj in the second half of the 17th century, the confirmations of ten children born within the Cvitulić family were recorded, to parents Šimun Cvitulić and his wife Manda, Matij Cvitulić and his wife Kate, Vicko Cvitulić and his wife Mara, Mate Cvitulić and his wife Mara, Šimun Cvitulić and wife Lucie and Matij Cvitulić and wife Margarita. It is difficult to follow the exact change of generations due to the relatively large number of members of this genus.

Šimun Cvitulić, son of Visko Cvitulić, married Luca, daughter of Šimun Miklanić, in 1691, and in 1694, Šimun Cvitulić (probably the second Šimun Cvitulić) married Franica, daughter of Antun Zagorčić. I think the descendants of Šimun and Luca are the Longin or Viskov, and the descendants of Šimun and Franica are the Hujnov. The fact that there were two Šimun Cvitulićs is indicated also by the death register, which records the deaths of Šimun Cvitulić in 1718 at the age of 60 and Lucija Cvitulić at the age of 60, as well as the deaths of Šimun Cvitulić in 1759 at the age of 60 and in 1762. Franica Cvitulić.

Šimun Cvitulić and Luce had a son Šimun in 1694, and again a son Šimun in 1699, which indicates that the first son died soon after childbirth. In the register of marriages in 1723, the marriage of Šimun Viskov and Ela Zanetov was entered. Šimun Viskov is indicated in the birth register as Šimun Cvitulić, and his wife as Jele, Jelena or Elena. In 1724, 1728, 1730, 1731, 1734 and 1742, they had children Šime, Jive, Šimun and Manda, Lucija, Antona and Marko. In the register of deaths of Brbinj parish in 1753, the fact of the death of Elena Lunginova "deto" (called) Cvitulić was entered, which is the first time I find an explicit link between the surnames Longin and Cvitulić. I found the same link in the register of births in 1758, when the fact of the birth of Tomica from Ivan Lungin "deto" (called) Cvitulić and Justina Hrišić, was recorded. According to my conclusion, this Ivan Lungin deto Cvitulić is Jive Cvitulić, born in 1728 to Šimun Cvitulić and Jela. In the registry of marriages, the marriage was entered "between Ivan, son of Šimun Cvitulić from Brbinj and Justina Meštrov "deto" (called) Hrišić, daughter of the late Mikula Hrunčev from Savar". Ivan Longin Cvitulić and Justina Hrišić Meštrov had children Lovre, Antona, Krševan, Tomica, Kata and Mara Lucija. Apparently, the lineage was not continued through the male line, so Lucija, daughter of Ivan Cvitulić, marries Lovre, son of Antun Pesić, who comes to theirs estate and takes the surname Longin. In the register of marriages in 1798, the fact of marriage was entered "between Lovre, son of Anton Pesić and Lucija, daughter of the late Ivan Cvitulić." Don Riko Finka also writes about the fact that the Longin are actually Pesić in the male line, who states that the Longini are "pure Pesić in the male line, and Longin in the female line", and also states that "the Longin tribe is only mentioned late in 1754, which they took from the settlement where they came to Longinovo". According to my research, as explained before, the Longin surname are indeed mentioned in the Glagolitic registers for the first time in 1754 or 1758, and they are Ivan Lungin deto Cvitulić and Elena Lunginova deto Cvitulić, but Ivan is the son of Šimun Cvitulić, so the Longins are Cvitulićs, which quite undoubtedly comes from the Glagolitic registers, and a branch of Cvitulić is marked with the surname Longin. Here, similar as with Kaleb and other Brbinj clans, I believe that don Riko Finka, who conducted extensive research on Brbinj clans, still wrongly concluded that the Longin family were some kind of settlers who suddenly came to Brbinj, and did not take into account the fact that many families in Brbinj used two or even more surnames. Behind Lovre Longin, actually Pesić, the lineage is continued by his son Šimun Longin, whose son Mate will marry Marija Šćavunjena and thus reconnect the two branches of the Cvitulić family, although at that moment they are no longer genetically related, which I explain below.

The existence of another branch of Cvitulić family is indicated by the lists of the souls of Brbinj parish. That second branch of Cvitulić is also called Hujnov or Šćaunjev. Thus, in the list of the state of souls from 1709, Mate Cvitulić and Šime Cvitulić were entered between Ivo Miklanić and Šime and Tome Miklanić. Even today, the old house of the Huinov family is located in the immediate vicinity of the ruins of the Mikljanjev (Miklanić). In 1710, Mate Šćaunev and Šime Šćaunev and Franica Šćauneva were entered in the list of the state of souls.[1]. In 1711, Mate Šćaunev and Šime Šćaunev were registered again, between Vice Miklan (Mikljanjev) and Šime Miklan and Toma Miklanić and Franic Šćaunev. In 1712, Mate Huin and Šima Huinić and Franic Šćunel were registered between Ivo Miklanić and Toma Miklanić. In 1713, Šime Vickov, Vicko Cvitulić and Šime Huinić and Mate Huin were registered after the Oblak family.

In the Glagolitic registers of Brbinj parish, I found the first mention of the Hujnov surname in the death register in 1715, when the death of Franica Huinova was recorded, or in 1717, when the death of Mate Huin was recorded. Is this Mate Huin actually Matij Cvitulić who married Ursa Tudiskova in 1674?

According to my conclusion, the Huinov or Šćavunjev are the descendants of Šimun Cvitulić and Franica, the daughter of Anton Zagorčić (Bologna), who, as stated before, were married in 1694. In the register of births, when registering the births of their children, they are mostly identified as Šimun Cvitulić and Franica[2]  and as Šimun Šćaubev and Franica[3]. Their lineage continues, according to my conclusion, through their son Vicenco (Visko). Visko Šćaunev marries Matia Gržaneva from Sestrunj and they have a daughter Franica and sons Šime, Lovre, Bartul, Matija, Grgur, Krševan and Osip. That this Visko Šćaunev is actually Visko Cvitulić is clearly shown by the entry from the Book of Chrisms of Brbinj parish from 1756, when the confirmation of Mate, the son of Visko Cvitulić "deto" (called) Šćavunev and Matia Gržaneva from Sestrunj, was entered. The lineage is continued by the descendants of Matij and Grgur. It is interesting that in 1806, Matija, daughter of Matija Cvitulić, and Anton, son of Anton Bolonin (Zagorčići) got married, and they were "denspenšana (got permission from the archibiscop) from the fourth branch of blood", so they are relatives in the fourth generation. Matija is therefore the daughter of Matija Cvitulić, who is the son of Visko Cvitulić (Šćaunev), who is the son of Šimun Cvitulić and Franica, the daughter of Anton Zagorčić (Bologna), so they are related to the Bologna family.

Although Matij and Grgur also had male descendants, it seems that the male line of the Šćaunjes or Hujnos was extinct, and in 1806 Ante, the son of Lovre Rančić and Kata, the daughter of Grgur Cvitulić, got married. Probably Ante Rančić came to the estate of the Hujnov family.

Also, in the register of marriages of Brbinj parish written in Latin from 1833, we learn that Osip Bahajev, a widower, and Tomica Schavuneva, also a widow, got married. Tomica's parents are listed as Gargo Schavugnev and Ivanica Schavugnieva, so Tomica is the daughter of Grgur Sćavunjev and Jivanica, who were married in 1768 (in the register of marriages it says: "between Grgur son of Visko Cvitulić and Jivanica daughter of Osip Mirkov"). In the register of births in 1781, there is an entry of the birth of Tomica from Grgur Cvitulić and Jivanica Mirkova. So, Tomica is a widow. There is no entry of her first marriage in the marriage registers, so it can be concluded that she married for the first time in the period from 1809 to 1825. Namely, in that period there were no registers of marriages of Brbinj parish, the Glagolitic register of marriages ends in 1808, and the one written in Latin begins in 1825. How Tomica kept the last name Schavugnev, and how until her second marriage she lived in a house in a house in Brbinje numbered 35 (which should roughly correspond to the number of the Hujnov family old house today in Brbinj), all of which we find out based on data from the Latin register of marriages, can be conclude that she also stayed on the family estate during her first marriage and that her husband, whose identity is unknown, probably came to the estate of Hujnov family. Tomica died in the Bahajev family the following year in 1834, and thus one branch of the descendants of Grgur Cvitulić Šćavinjev Hujnov died out.

The second branch of this family was therefore continued with the arrival of Ante or Anton, the son of Lovre Rančić, who married Kata, the second daughter of Grgur Šćavunjev Hujnov. Anton died in 1827 at the age of 38 under the name Anton Hujna, and his parents were listed as Lovre Rančić and Justina Španjol. These data agree with the data from the Glagolitic birth register, which records the birth of Antun, son of Lovre Rančić and Justina Španjol, in 1788. So, it is clear that Anton Hujnov is actually Rančić. In the register of births, the birth of Ante to Anton Rančić and Kate Cvitulić was entered in 1808. We learn from later registers that Kate Šćavunjeva apparently died and that her husband Anton is marrying Ursa. In the register of the dead, the death of Lovre Scaunjev, from father Anton Scaunjev and mother Ursa Schaunjeva, was recorded in 1833, and in 1834, the death of Ivan Schaunjev, father Anton Schaunjev and mother Ursa Schaunjev.

In 1846, the marriage of Mate Lungin, from father Šima Lungin and mother Filipa Gargin and Marija Schavujeva, from father Ante Schavujev and mother Ursa Rančeva, was entered in the register of marriages. So, from these data we learn that behind Anton Hujnov, born to father Lovra Rančić, and his second wife Ursa, there is a daughter, Marija Šćavunjeva, who is actually not a Hujnov or Šćavunjev or Cvitulić on either her father's or mother's side, and she marries Mate Lungin , son of Šima Lungin and Filipa Grgin. Šime Lungin is the son of Lovre Longin, born Pesić, who married Lucija Longin and took the surname. In this way, the two branches of the old Cvitulić family from Brbinj are connected again, although at that moment Marija Šćavunjeva is no longer a Šćavunjev or a Hujnov either by the male or female line, and Mate Longin is a Longin only by the female line, i.e. by his grandmother Lucia Longin.

It is interesting that in the later register books of Brbinj parish written in Latin, the surname Šćavunjev is sometimes written as Schiavon. My opinion is that it is a derivative of the old Brbinj surname Schiavonovich, which we find in the list of the Zadar city prince Oktavijan Mocenig from 1608, when Marco Schiovonovich was listed as the "head" of one of the Brbinj families. In the Excerpts of the oldest registry books of the parish of Brbinj in 1609, the following fact of baptism is recorded: "Baptized doughter Jlena from Marik Šćavunu and his wifeElna". I believe that Mariko Šćavun is actually Marco Schiavonovich from the 1608 census. So, apparently, the Cvitulići in Brbinj were related to the Skiavonovići in Brbinje (I believe they are the Šćavunjes, as they were called in Brbinje). It may have been more than one name for one family, or the Cvitulić branch came to the estate on the Šćavunjev family property, or vice versa. I don't know how the last name Hujnov came about, but maybe it could be, considering the origin of some other last names in Brbinj, that it was a nickname of one of the family members.

[1] According to my conclusion, this Franica Šćaunjeva is the Franica daughter of Anton Zagorčić who married Šimun Cvitulić in 1694
